The inaugural Commerce Awards for Publishers (#TheCAPs) took place in September 2018 at Tribeca Grill in New York City.

The awards recognise quality commerce journalism and the publishers that have found the balance between providing quality service journalism to readers, and using commerce content to scale a lucrative new revenue stream.

The winners and nominees of the first Commerce Awards for Publishers

The CAP for Best Technology & Gadget Article (Mashable)

Mashable won the CAP for Best Technology & Gadget Article for their article, “Which tablet to buy for your kid: These are 5 of the best out right now.”

The article helps parents find a kid-friendly tablet, showcasing five options at a range of price points. Each option has an in-depth review and has criteria which readers can easily compare against alternatives in the article.

The article won top marks from judges for being informative, it’s layout and knowledge of the audience.

Mashable’s Leah Stodart and Nicole Cammorata pose with their CAP.

Other nominees:
Wired – “Watch Samsung Unveil The Galaxy Note 9 Smartphone
The Verge – “How to pick the graphics card that’s right for you” and “How to pick the Microsoft Surface that’s right for you

Best Evergreen Article (Esquire)

The CAP for Best Evergreen Article went to Esquire for “This is how your jeans should fit right now.”

The article was originally published in July 2017 and was updated in summer for 2018. Inspired by a high search volume for “jeans” focused keywords, the article is formatted to help people answers questions readers have about what pair of jeans to buy.

The article walks through different styles of jean (e.g. straight, skinny) and then offers the perfect pair at different price points to cater for a broad range of budgets.

The article was popular with judges, with its engaging appearance and utility in particular receiving high praise.

Hearst Director of Partnerships and Commerce Emily Silverman collects the CAP for Best Evergreen Article on behalf of Esquire.

Other nominees:
Timeout – “London’s best shops for online flowers
Huffington Post – “11 Weighted Blankets That Won’t Weigh Down Your Wallet
Polygon – “Upgrade your Nintendo switch with our favourite accessories
Self.com – “The 12 Best Meal Kit Delivery Services For Easy Pre-Prepped Dinners and Smoothies
Tom’s Guide – “Best Smartphones Review
Apartment Therapy – “Best Places To Buy Art Online
Esquire – “This Is How Your Jeans Should Fit Right Now

Best Fashion Article (GQ)

The next award was one of the most competitive on the award. Just five points separated the first and third placed entries.

But in the end, GQ emerged as the winner of The CAP for Best Fashion Article.

Jeans it appears were a popular product among judges: The winning article is titled, “The Best Jeans for Men Under $100 Are Available at a Shopping Mall Near You”.

GQ wanted to use their submission to highlight their “Best Stuff” articles, which roundup the best of in various categories, which receive GQ editors’ esteemed seal of approval. They also say that they chose article because it combines a wardrobe staple everyone needs with a price point they’ve found their readers respond to.

That’s exactly the kind of balance that should underpin quality commerce content, so it is great to see the article was rewarded for that by the judges.

Emily Noszkay – Director of Commerce at Condé Nast – collects the CAP for Best Fashion Article on behalf of GQ.

Other nominees:
Vogue – “Angelina Jolie’s New Go-To Travel Shoe is Surprisingly Affordable
Huffington Post – “7 Plus Size Clothing Subscription Boxes For Curvy Women
GQ – “The Best Crewneck Sweatshirts for Men Deserve Their Wardrobe Essential Status
New York Magazine – “The Unlikely Tale of an $89 Amazon Coat That’s Taken Over the Upper East Side
Cosmopolitan – “8 New Ways to Style Bandanas That’ll Impress All Your Friends

Best Digital Native Publisher (Apartment Therapy)

Another close category was Best Digital Native Publisher.

However, once all the scores were collected, Apartment Therapy came out on top.

For these broader awards publishers were asked to submit a variety of articles that showed off the range and quality of their commerce content.

In their submission, Apartment Therapy, placed the commerce content they create as a natural extension of the service they’ve long provided to their readers through content. They also put particular emphasis on specifically curating product recommendations with end reader delight in mind.

In sum they say they’d like their readers to think of Apartment Therapy as their “personal shopper”.

Submitted articles ranged from in-depth product reviews, to recommendations best stores to buy particular items and budget-focused listicles, such as “10 sources for good, cheap rugs on a budget”.

Apartment Therapy’s Executive Director of Commerce Chris Mainenti wins the CAP for Best Digital Native Publisher.

Other nominees:
HuffPost Finds
Vox Media
Apartment Therapy
Refinery29
Fatherly
BuzzFeed

Best Flash Event (Polygon – Vox)

The CAP for Best Flash Event was designed to reward timely commerce content. Often the best pieces of commerce content alert readers to a new product launch or time-limited deal, so it made sense to recognise this in an awards program.

The winning piece from Polygon is titled, “The NES Classic is back: where and how to buy the Nintendo mini console” and focused on the restock of the previously popular retro Nintendo NES Classic edition.

Timed for release of the restock, the post links out to multiple merchants, and is designed to offer advice on how to purchase the device online and offline, but also enable Polygon to capture commission on sales referred direct from the post.

Vox’s Emily Heller picks up the CAP for Best Flash Event Article for Polygon.

Other nominees:
Huffington Post – “Blue Apron Now Has A Whole30 Meal Plan, But Only Through February
Wired – “Watch Samsung Unveil The New Galaxy Note 9 Smartphone
The Verge – “LG’s G7 ThinQ is now $599 at B&H for Verge readers
TODAY Show: Jill’s Steals and Deals

Best Dedicated Commerce Brand (The Strategist – New York Magazine)

At a certain stage of commerce maturity, publishers often look to develop an editorial brand dedicated purely to commerce content and product reviews, so we created a category to honour these particular publications.

The winner of the CAP for Best Dedicated Commerce Brand was New York Magazine’s The Strategist.

The Strategist’s submission rooted the brand’s place in New York Magazine’s, “50 year tradition of obsessively telling its readers what’s worth buying.”

In their own words, The Strategist has been able to become a viable business because the editorial team insists on only including products they truly stand behind and through affiliate they can link out to the entire online shopping-sphere.

Warm feedback from judges focused on the fact the articles are “real” and just happen to be selling products as a side effect.

Articles submitted as evidence ranged from skincare to the best beach umbrella to best gifts for moms.

The Strategist Deputy Editor Jason Chen receives The CAP for Best Dedicated Commerce Brand.

Other nominees:
BestProducts.com
Insider Picks

Best Editorial Brand (New York Magazine)

The final award of the night was The CAP for Best Editorial Brand which went to New York Media.

Their winning submission focused on how The Strategist team works across the organization with other editors to incorporate product-focused content into other publications. Across all brands, readers find a shared editorial commitment to expert-driven and useful commerce content, making for a compelling cross-vertical commerce approach.

Feedback from judges focused on overall style of New York Media titles and their “clever” approach to integrating shopping in their stories.

In action again, Strategist Deputy Editor Jason Chen collects the CAP for Best Editorial Brand on behalf of parent brand New York Magazine.

Other nominees:
American Media Inc. / US Weekly
HuffPost Finds
Allure
Vox Media
Tom’s Guide
GQ Recommends
Shop TODAY (NBC TODAY Show)
Mashable

With only 7 weeks to go until the big commerce event that is Black Friday, we at Skimlinks want to make sure that Publishers are set up to maximise all potential revenue opportunities.

We’ve put together a checklist for Publishers to make sure they make the most of this key shopping period.

Install the Skimlinks Editor Toolbar

The Skimlinks Editor Toolbar is the easiest way to see if a merchant offers commission rates, what they are and if they offer any exclusive rates. Publishers can see all of this information in the Editor Toolbar, without having to navigate away from the Merchant’s website and login to any other system. It’s just part of your workflow.

So make sure that everyone who will be producing commerce content for the holiday period has the Skimlinks Editor Toolbar installed. Download the Editor Toolbar here.

Create Shoppable Galleries

Create shoppable galleries of the best deals for Black Friday, and throughout the holiday season.  This is really easy to do with our shopping widget.

The shoppable galleries that publishers create can contain products that are similar, eg Televisions or Smartphones, giving your users the choice of several brands in one place.  The galleries can also be created to showcase products for a specific theme, eg Cycling Accessories or Living Room Essentials.

The big advantage to using the shopping galleries during the holiday period is that there is no maintenance for the Editorial team, if a product has sold out at one retailer, it will be replaced with a link for another retailer or it will be removed from the gallery.

The shoppable galleries can be accessed through the Skimlinks JavaScript, there is no need for any engineering work to happen publisher side or any additional code to add to your site.

Skimlinks partners with Monetizer101 to bring the shopping galleries to market, please let your Skimlinks account manager know that you want to activate the shoppable galleries and they’ll be able to get you set up.  Please note, the shoppable galleries are available only for select publishers.

Need some help writing commerce content or choosing products

The Skimlinks Editorial Team, headed up by our Chief Editor, Shane Roberts, is building out a library of product recommendation content available for your syndication.

While the content won’t be specific to Black Friday and the Holiday Period this year, our Editorial Team will also be launching the Skimlinks Deal of the Day series, offering a new best in class discount paired with an increased CPA every weekday and through the holiday season.

This content will be available to a select group of publishers, please speak to your account manager if you are interested in getting access.

Get the latest offers

Skimlinks is constantly adding new offers from merchants to the Publisher Hub.  Publishers can view these offers either by searching for a specific merchant and looking on their Merchant Profile Page or by going straight to the Offers section to view them all.

On the Offers Page you can narrow offers by country, see which offers are currently live and which ones are coming soon.  Publishers can also search by our Preferred Partners and see Merchants that have provided increased commission rates available exclusively through Skimlinks.  This is a great way to discover new merchants and products to write about, while generating extra commission. View the latest offers available in the Skimlinks Platform here.

Evergreen Articles

Maximize your SEO ranking and instead of producing lots of new content this holiday period, update your top performing pages and any pages you’ve created for past Black Fridays.  Publishers are already getting lots of traffic, so add new offers or products and make sure all links are working, to make sure no revenue opportunity is missed.

And if your evergreen articles are product reviews, this is the perfect place to add a Price Comparison tool.  By adding a Price Comparison Tool, Publishers provide their users with choice on which merchant they are going to purchase the product from, without the need to search around for the best price on other sites.  This means that the publisher can increase their conversion rates and revenue, very simply, for these highly trafficked articles.

The Price Comparison Tools can be accessed through the Skimlinks JavaScript, there is no need for any engineering work to happen publisher side or any additional code to add to your site.

Skimlinks partners with Monetizer101 to bring the price comparison tools to market, please let your Skimlinks account manager know that you want to activate the price comparison tools and they’ll be able to get  you set up. Please note, the price comparison tools are available only for select publishers.

Don’t have Skimlinks installed on your site?

What are you waiting for?  Apply now for a Skimlinks account and once you have been approved, install the JavaScript on your site and you’ll be able to start generating revenue from your commerce content straight away.  You can sign up for your account here.

Mumsnet is the UK’s largest network for parents, with over 12 million unique visitors per month, clocking up over 128 million page views and with a network of over 10,000 influencers. Skimlinks and Mumsnet have been working together for close to a decade.

We recently sat down with James to talk about the eCommerce strategy at Mumsnet. Focusing on how they’ve gone from managing 17 different networks and manual reporting of performance, to consolidating their activity with Skimlinks and the benefits they’ve seen from doing so.

“User-inspired product recommendations have been at the heart of Mumsnet since the beginning. Being able to create a revenue stream to help fund our business, in a way that was both unobtrusive and retains the trust of our users, was very important. This shared ethos is one of the reasons Mumsnet works with Skimlinks.” James Smith, Head of eCommerce, Mumsnet

Today Skimlinks is delighted to announce three big updates to the way publishers are able to view merchants and their rates, which make it easier to see commision rates and their conditions and find new merchants to write about.

Editor Toolbar

The Editor Toolbar is one of our most used products and we’ve turbocharged it with additional features to give publishers more control.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can do and what’s new with the Editor Toolbar:

– See the average commission rate the merchant has paid over the last 90 days

– Access the exclusive rates the merchant offers you

– Easily see if there are any specific conditions that relate to merchant rates

– Easy access to full details around the rates on offer from the merchant.

– Create shortened links to use on your social channels or newsletters

– Use the domain selector to view the correct rates across different publisher domains

If you aren’t using the Editor Toolbar, you can download and install it now.

Merchant Page

Like the Editor Toolbar, we’ve given the Merchant Pages a facelift to provide more transparency to publishers around the potential commision rates available.

Publishers can now see:

– The average commision rate paid by the merchant over the last 90 days across the Skimlinks network

– The average performance statistics including earnings per click, conversion rate and basket size by merchants across the Skimlinks network. These figures are not a guarantee on what publishers will be paid, but are there to provide more detail around how the merchant performs generally

– Where Skimlinks have negotiated an exclusive rate for publishers, this is clearly visible

To increase transparency, the Merchant Pages now include Network Commission Details. In this section, publishers will be able to view the exact information provided to Skimlinks from each of the affiliate networks we work with, showing rates and conditions.

Merchant Categorisation

Finding new merchants to write about is important for publishers, to make this easier we’ve completed a big update to the vertical categorisation of merchants in the Publisher Hub. For example, the next time a publisher is searching for a Consumer Electronics merchant, they will see a larger selection of merchants to discover and choose from.

You can access all of these great enhancements right now by logging into the Publisher Hub.

The post Five content ideas publishers can monetize this September appeared first on Industry Leader In Affiliate Marketing Solutions | Skimlinks.

Think about September and a few things come to mind: Fall, Earth, Wind and Fire, Harvest, Forget-me-nots, Greenday. But one thing that doesn’t immediately come to mind is content ideas. Especially ideas that will help you monetize your content. Scratch the surface though and publishers can find a wealth of ideas to draw on. So we’ve put together a select few here to get you started.

National Grandparents Day:

If you’re scratching your head, you can be forgiven, National Grandparents Day is not on the scale of Father’s Day or Mother’s Day. But it does offer an alternative ecommerce opportunity in two ways. First it is traditional to give Forget-me-nots, which serve as the flower of September and offers publishers an opportunity to write about online flower merchants, of which there are many in Skimlinks’ network. Second, National Grandparents Day is focused on making memories, which gives publishers a great opportunity to monetize content around merchants focused on experiences. So for both these reasons, it is a great opportunity to create content you can monetize and earn revenue from.

National Yoga Month

National Yoga Day falls in June and is linked to the summer equinox. The National Yoga Month falls in September, and as consequently everyone who’s anyone will pay close attention to aligning their chakras during September, it is a great opportunity to write some commerce content. Whether you focus on mats, athleisure or the “clean living” lifestyle many yogis are keen on, there’s a lot of ways to get involved in the National Yoga Month fun.

Labor Day

This is a no brainer. Labor Day is a big sales day and the average Labor Day weekend shopper will spend almost $60. There is also a broad range of categories for publishers to write content about. There are opportunities in travel as people cross the US for the holiday, in retail as brands use the weekend for discounting and promotions, groceries for people planning parties, and also last chance for school supplies as the Back-To-School period closes. Keep a close eye on the Offers Tab in the Skimlinks Hub to spot deals for Labor Day as they’re added.

Winter Apparel

As summer draws to a close and fall…falls, people’s attention looks ahead to winter. Grim as the prospect of fading sunlight, cold weather and grey days may be, people also want to get prepared for them. So if you want to create some winter weather clothing content, September is a great time to get it ready and well indexed in search engines as people begin hunting. Google Trends Data shows interest begins rising from September 1, so this could be a good content idea to explore.

Indian Summer

Or alternatively, if summer clings on, as it seems to in recent years, think about Indian summer. Typically a period of warm weather that lingers into the fall, these are becoming more common as the years go by. Writing about it will depend on climate conditions, but this could be an excellent way to cash in on unexpectedly warm weather. If people have worn out clothes from wearing them all summer long, they’ll look for warm weather items to get them across the line, and that they can wear into next year. Retailers will also be looking to discount and shift summer stock, which could make this a win on all fronts.

So where previously you might have been dancing in September, hopefully know you have a couple new content ideas you can put into practice. Once you’ve written your article, you can find relevant merchants to link to using our public search pages.

What makes a merchant attractive to a publisher? You might think it’s just providing them with an increased commission rate but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With years of experience helping publishers build their commerce strategies, and over $1 billion of ecommerce transactions in its network in 2017, the insights from Skimlinks platform shows what key actions merchants need to take to scale revenue with top content publishers.

Time-limited Rate Increases do not drive performance

The analysis of 441 time-limited rate increases in the Skimlinks Platform shows that for well established merchants with a long standing relationships with publishers, time-limited rate increases are a good way drive additional performance, but it does not work for merchants who are still building relationships with publishers. In fact, we saw a negative effect of 3% in performance for time-limited offers from Self Serve merchants. So what does work? Below are key insights from the Skimlinks platform that Self Serve merchants can do today, to make a difference to their performance and revenue growth.

Increasing Base Commission Rate drives merchant revenue

Cyber Monday is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to be writing commerce-related content (comtent) about electronics. Video games are regular top commission drivers in our network over Thanksgiving weekend and publishers can make up to $80 on big-ticket electrical items over Cyber weekend and Cyber Monday, so writing the comtent is definitely worth it. We’ve got three top tips to write electrifying Cyber Monday comtent below and deals from our merchants so you can get writing straight away.

1. Skip straight to social

Cyber Monday is a feeding frenzy, so you need to make sure you have a constant stream of content throughout the day to keep your readers engaged and clicking on your affiliate links. Sharing affiliate links straight to social is a great way to do this, and with our Editor Tool, you can share short affiliate links straight from a merchant’s website.

Here’s a few merchants to get you started sharing offers:

B&H Photo 75% off sale, Commission 4%, 5% Outdoor Gear, 6% for Pro Audio

Newegg.com 76% off Bluetooth Selfie Sticks, 1.5% commission

T-Mobile Bring your device or buy a phone, get $200 back in bill credit over 20 months 11/24-12/31

2. Make your comtent topical

Throughout Cyber Monday, your priority as a publisher is making sure you’re writing about the right deals at the right time. A great way to be topical is to use recent talking points, like the launch of The Grand Tour on Amazon Instant video, to push relevant products like Amazon Fire TV, now available refurbished for a $44 discount.

3. Be game for Cyber Monday

It used to be all about big ticket electrical items, now video game consoles and games are the big business on Cyber Monday. They were a top performing category in our network last Black Friday weekend and we expect nothing different this year! With a new Pokémon game and titles like the new Call of Duty for Xbox and Playstation, this could be the bumper year for video games, so make sure to feature them in your comtent — publishers earned up to $20 per bundle last year. Here’s a few offers and deals we cherrypicked to help you make sure you win on Cyber Monday:

Gamestop Inc Save $50 on new Xbox One S 1TB consoles (Commission 2-5%)
Dell: Save 19% on Xbox One S 500 GB Battlefield Bundle + Skyrim SE with free shipping! (Commission 2%)

Black Friday is here! There’s still time to create killer commerce-related content (or comtent!), which is why we pulled some great examples for you to emulate, and merchants to focus your product features around. So get started: the clock is ticking!

1 – Think Fitness and Health First

Many people think the fitness rush starts in January after too much indulgence over the holidays, but fitness buying starts way before the new year sales. Vox have this great guide focused around health and fitness, which mixes simple and sophisticated treats for the fitness freak in your life. Here’s three merchants in our network, their Black Friday offers and commission rates so you can create your own fitness gift guide right now:

Sweatty Betty: 25% off Everything 11/24-11/28. Products will be marked down on site. 8% commission.

lululemon: Up to 70% off Select merchandise! 11/22-12/12. 10.5% commission.

Tillys: Mix & Match, Buy 1 Get 1 50% off, 20% off single item across brands including Adidas, Nike SB, Converse and more. Use code SLEIGH20. Offer ends 12/24.

2. Take tech comtent seriously

The Thanksgiving weekend is a great sales period and as we move into Cyber Monday electronics and technology products become more and more important. Smartphones, video games and tablets are all up for grabs and in Elle’s tech gift guide you can get a feel for how easy it is to create your own tech gift guide. Check out these sample offers we’ve pulled to help get you started:

Newegg.com: Dedicated Black Friday page, 11/26, Commission 1.5%
Geekbuying: Up to 75% off Black Friday sale here, Commission 6%, till 11/27
B&H Photo Video: New HOURLY deals throughout the day. Commission 4%, 5% Outdoor Gear, 6% Pro Audio.

3. The holidays are a time for giving…toys

And unsurprisingly, toys were one of the best performing categories in our network last Black Friday. So putting some time into comtent focused around toys for kids (and parents) could be worth it. Buzzfeed’s gift guide neatly balances kids and adults requirements, and you can too with these merchants and their wonderful offers:

The Childrensplace: 50-60% off sale, 40% off everything else, Free shipping until 11/30, Commission 3%
NotOnTheHighStreet: Personalised gifts, Commission 8%

4. Tis the season to strike a pose

Beauty is big business during the holidays and as one of our top 5 performing categories at Black Friday 2015 we expect it to be even bigger this year. Refinery29’sbumper beauty guide covers all bases, making it open accessible and shaping the post to have the best possible chances of success. These merchants are bursting to the brim with beauty goods and all have handy seasonal offers running for Black Friday:

5. Feature festive fashion

There are parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and carolling out in the snow, and chances are your readers are looking for a different look for each activity at this most wonderful time of the year. Glamour’s Fashion Gift Guide has figured out the price point for its readers and picked out a spread of different categories to make sure there’s an item for everyone (like this great pom pom!). Take advantage of these merchants offers to do the same in your own fashion gift guide:

H&M: Up to 70% off new styles. Free shipping on all orders. Code: 0319. Commission 8%.
Topshop: Up to 50% off dresses! Ends 11/30. Commission 12%.
Urban Outfitters Buy one get one 50% off all apparel. Until 11/25. Commission 10%.
